Using Re:Vault

Q: A page won't load.

Try switching the engine or transport in Settings, Connection & engine, or use the retry button on the error screen.

Q: Can I quickly hide my screen?

Yes. Settings, Focus & privacy lets you set a custom tab title and icon, a quick-hide key, and an about:blank launcher.

Type a site or search into the address bar to open it in a tab. Use the + button for a new tab, drag tabs to reorder them, and open Settings from the gear icon to customise everything.

Command palette

Press Ctrl + K (or ⌘ + K) to open the command palette - a fast launcher for sites, bookmarks, recent pages, tools, folders, and actions. Start typing and press Enter.

Keyboard shortcuts

Your host browser reserves some combinations; anything it intercepts is also available from the toolbar or the command palette.

Favorites & history

Tap the ★ in the toolbar to favorite the current site, or the ★ on any book or app card. All of them gather in the Favorites shortcut - one ecosystem. Open History to revisit sites; turn on the favorites bar, or disable history, in Settings → General & behavior.

Tools

The Tools shortcut opens a built-in toolbox - a calculator, notes, a unit converter, timers, a QR generator, text utilities, a whiteboard, Markdown, and more. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere. Open the launcher at /tools.

Worksheets & Books

Worksheets is a launcher of school and study web apps that open right inside Re:Vault. Books is a built-in reading library. Both have a live search.

Linux

The Linux shortcut boots a real Linux computer inside a Re:Vault tab: one click and Alpine Linux starts, logs you in as root and connects to the internet. It is also in Worksheets (Developer) and the command palette (type "linux" or "terminal"). Open it at /linux.

Console is the machine's terminal (copy and paste work). Screen shows its display: click it to send your keyboard and mouse to the machine, and press Ctrl + Alt + G to get them back.
Files moves files between your device and the machine. On Alpine they appear in /mnt/host; save a file there to download it.
Save snapshots the whole machine in this browser, and Stop saves before it stops, so the next start picks up where you left off. The machine pauses while its tab is hidden.
New adds more machines, including your own ISO or IMG file. With CheerpX turned on (Settings → Linux) you can also add a Debian terminal (bash, apt, Python) and an Alpine desktop; they load CheerpX from Leaning Technologies under its Community License, which you accept before the first start. Use Save disk before closing those.

Everything runs on your device; machines, snapshots and disks are stored in this browser and never uploaded. A machine can run in one tab at a time. Manage storage, networking and the default engine in Settings → Linux.

FAQ

Is my activity private? Re:Vault keeps your activity on your device and offers a private mode that can hide file names and on-screen text. Use private/incognito mode or clear your data anytime in Settings → Privacy & data.

Does Linux work on my Chromebook? Yes. The Alpine machine uses v86, which runs in any modern browser with 256 MB of memory; the first boot takes around half a minute to a couple of minutes depending on the device. The CheerpX machines need Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari with SharedArrayBuffer, which Re:Vault provides.
